Kannur: Air Kerala, a new airline, has announced plans to launch its operations in June 2025, with its inaugural flight departing from Kannur International Airport.

The airline, which has finalised key appointments, including its CEO and CFO, has entered into a partnership with Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL) to operate regional flights.

As per the agreement with KIAL, Air Kerala will initially focus on domestic destinations within a one-and-a-half-hour flying range from Kannur. Air Kerala Chairman Afi Ahmed emphasized the importance of Kannur Airport’s infrastructure in supporting the airline’s operations. “Kannur International Airport will play a key role in our operational strategy,” Ahmed said.

The collaboration is expected to deliver reliable and affordable travel options while setting the stage for international services in the future. Ahmed added, “Our partnership with KIAL enables us to connect major domestic regions while preparing for international operations. Together, we aim to provide dependable and cost-effective travel solutions.”

Air Kerala received a no-objection certificate from the Civil Aviation Ministry in July and is in the process of obtaining a flying permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Initially, the airline plans to use regional twin-engine turboprop ATR aircraft and transition to narrow-body jets as operations grow.

The airline’s future plans include international flights, positioning Kannur Airport as a central hub for connecting passengers to global destinations. By focusing on strategic domestic routes, Air Kerala aims to facilitate seamless travel from regional areas to international locations through Kannur, enhancing its status as a major hub for air travel.
