Dubai Airports, Al Jalila Foundation host simulated travel experience for children with autism

DXB is also recognized globally as the first international airport to be designated a Certified Autism Center.

Dubai: In a collaborative initiative, Dubai Airports and the Al Jalila Foundation organized a guided travel simulation at Dubai International Airport (DXB) for children on the autism spectrum enrolled in the Ta’alouf Programme.

The event was designed to help children and their families gain confidence and prepare for air travel in a supportive setting.

The Ta’alouf Programme, launched over a decade ago by the Al Jalila Foundation—Dubai Health’s charitable arm—focuses on empowering educators and families of individuals with disabilities. It offers training to better address behavioral, psychological, and educational needs, supporting the inclusion of individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and other developmental conditions into everyday life.

This hands-on experience was made possible through the support of the oneDXB community, along with caregivers, volunteers, and airport personnel. It aligns with the UAE’s Year of the Community initiative and reinforces Dubai Airports’ mission to create a more inclusive travel environment.

Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, highlighted the importance of empathy and collaboration in making air travel accessible. “True accessibility isn’t just about facilities—it’s about understanding and meeting individual needs,” he said.

Amer Al Zarooni, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, expressed gratitude for the partnership, noting that it aligns with national strategies to empower people of determination and reflects DXB’s dedication to inclusive practices.

During the simulation, children experienced various airport procedures—including check-in, passport control, and boarding—in a calm and supportive atmosphere. Trained Guest Experience Ambassadors were on hand to guide them through the process at their own pace, helping to ease anxiety and increase comfort with future travel.

This initiative is part of Dubai Airports’ broader inclusivity drive, which includes the “We All Meet the World Differently” campaign. The airport continues to implement accessibility-focused improvements and staff training to better serve travelers with both visible and hidden disabilities.

DXB is also recognized globally as the first international airport to be designated a Certified Autism Center by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), solidifying its role as a leader in inclusive travel.
