Indian PM Modi inaugurates Thoothukudi Airport’s new terminal
Tuticorin: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly built terminal and expanded runway at Thoothukudi Airport in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, July 26.
The Airports Authority of India aims to increase annual passenger traffic at Thoothukudi Airport to 20 lakh over the next five to ten years. To support this goal and boost domestic and international connectivity, a new 17,340 sq. m terminal, inspired by traditional Chettinad architecture, has been constructed.
Additionally, the airport’s 1,350-meter runway has been extended to 3,115 meters and is now equipped with night landing capabilities to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and A321.
Passenger amenities have also been significantly upgraded — including 21 check-in counters, 7 baggage scanners, 3 aerobridges, seating for 644, a dedicated mothers’ feeding room, isolation areas, and 5 aircraft parking bays.
A modern fire station has also been established. These developments have enhanced the airport’s capacity from 156 to 1,400 passengers per hour.
