India eyes offshore airport on artificial island north of Mumbai

The design of the airport will resemble that of Hong Kong International and Osaka’s Kansai International airports, both of which are situated on man-made islands.

Mumbai: India is reportedly planning to construct its first offshore airport north of Mumbai, as part of the government’s efforts to modernize the nation’s infrastructure.

The airport will be located on an artificial island near the Vadhvan seaport along India’s western coast. The design of the airport will resemble that of Hong Kong International and Osaka’s Kansai International airports, both of which are situated on man-made islands.

According to The Financial Express, the project has secured initial approvals from India’s federal environment and defense ministries, as well as the Maharashtra state government. Feasibility studies are set to begin, with the Airports Authority of India involved in the process. The total investment will be disclosed after these studies are completed.

The new airport, situated approximately 125 km from Mumbai’s primary international airport, is part of the government’s broader infrastructure upgrade plans.

While the aviation, environment, and defense ministries have yet to comment on the project, the initiative signals India’s dedication to large-scale infrastructure development. However, such projects typically take several years to come to fruition.

The Vadhvan seaport, which will be three times the size of India’s current largest port and the deepest, is expected to improve regional connectivity. The offshore airport, built on reclaimed land, will help avoid delays typically caused by land acquisition issues.

A key challenge for the project will be ensuring sufficient passenger traffic to justify the large investment. The Vadhvan airport is being planned as Mumbai’s third airport, and effective transport connections between this new facility, Mumbai’s existing terminals, and the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport will be vital to its success.
