Bengaluru airport sees historic growth in passenger, cargo traffic

In FY25, the airport processed more than 41.88 million passengers and 502,480 MT of cargo.

Bengaluru: Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) recorded a remarkable rise in both passenger and cargo traffic during the 2024-25 fiscal year (FY), marking a significant milestone in its history.

The airport served over 41.88 million passengers and handled 500,000 metric tonnes (MT) of cargo. This represented an 11.6 percent increase in passenger traffic compared to FY24, which saw 37.53 million travellers. Domestic passenger traffic led the way, with 36.05 million people flying within India, reflecting a 10 percent year-on-year growth.

International passenger traffic also saw a notable uptick, rising by 25 percent to 5.83 million passengers. This increase was largely attributed to the expansion of IndiGo’s international routes, including new daily services to London Heathrow, as well as enhanced offerings from airlines like Cathay Pacific, KLM, Japan Airlines, and Qantas.

KIA has solidified its position as a key aviation hub in South India, connecting travellers to 76 domestic and 33 international destinations.

With the addition of Hanoi to its network in May 2025, the number of international destinations will rise to 34. The airport has also maintained its status as the third-busiest in India for international traffic.

In terms of cargo, KIA surpassed 500,000 MT for the first time, handling 502,480 MT in FY25, marking a 14 percent year-on-year increase.

International cargo volumes experienced the most significant growth, rising 21 percent to 321,418 MT, while domestic cargo grew by 4 percent to reach 181,062 MT. This highlights the airport’s increasing importance as a key player in both domestic and global freight operations.
