Three sites shortlisted for Bengaluru’s proposed second airport

The Airports Authority of India, after surveying seven potential sites in April, has shortlisted three promising locations.

Bengaluru: With Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) projected to reach its capacity limits in the coming years, Karnataka is actively advancing its vision for a second international airport to support Bengaluru’s growing aviation needs.

State Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil is set to meet Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu to discuss the proposal further, according to The Times of India.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI), after surveying seven potential sites in April, has shortlisted three promising locations for the new airport: Kaggalipura, Harohalli, and Chikkasolur. Kaggalipura and Harohalli are located along Kanakapura Road, while Chikkasolur lies on the Nelamangala–Kunigal stretch. All three sites are strategically positioned within a 25 to 45-kilometre radius from Bengaluru’s city centre, making them viable contenders.

The Karnataka government has already submitted a formal proposal to the Centre, offering 4,500 acres for the airport project. This move underscores the state’s readiness to enhance connectivity and support future passenger and cargo growth.

While the final assessment from AAI is awaited, discussions around optimal location continue. An aviation expert quoted in the report suggested exploring a site between Bengaluru and Mysuru, noting its potential to improve regional accessibility and serve nearby industrial hubs. The expert also revisited the idea of revitalising HAL Airport, which lies within city limits and could complement the city’s air infrastructure.

Adding another layer to the developments, neighbouring Tamil Nadu is also moving ahead with plans for an international airport in Hosur, about 150 kilometres from KIA. The state has identified two prospective sites and is awaiting a no-objection certificate (NOC) from Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) to proceed.

The Karnataka government remains optimistic that collaborative efforts with the Centre and aviation stakeholders will help fast-track the project, ensuring Bengaluru remains well-equipped to handle future air traffic demands.
